Belén Funes was born in Barcelona in 1984. Studied film directing at ESCAC (Spain) and screenwriting at EICTV (San Antonio de los Baños Film School). She has been working as script supervisor and assistant director in many Spanish productions. SARA'S RUNAWAY (Sara a la fuga) was her first short screened at international festivals like Zagreb Film Festival, Cinemed and won best short and best director at Málaga Film Festival. THE HOPELESS (La Inútil)is her second short, premiered at Valladolid-Seminci Film Festival and nominated for the Catalan Academy Awards. In 2016 Variety shortlisted Belén as one of the ten Spanish talents to track. Her first feature film, LA HIJA DE UN LADRÓN (A Thief's Daughter), premiered in the official competition of the 67th San Sebastian Festival and was the winner of the Gaudí Academy Award for Best Film in non-Catalan Language, and Belén Funes the Gaudí Academy Award for Best Director and also the Goya Academy Award for Best First Direction.
