Andrea Zapata-Girau

Vigo, 1986

Filmmaker and editor based in Galicia and Finland. Her work, at the intersection of fiction and non-fiction, explores the relationship between image, anthropology, sound, and music, and addresses issues such as family and community dynamics, cultural dislocation, and faith. She studied music at the Mayeusis Conservatory and Guildhall School, Audiovisual Communication at Pompeu Fabra University, and in 2006 she moved to Finland, where she studied a Bachelor of Culture and Arts at TAMK School of Art, Music, and Media majoring in film editing and got in contact with other languages ​​such as contemporary art and theater.

She has directed the music documentary GUITARRA DE PALO and short films such as JISKRA, AAVA, and RUOVESI. Her films have been programmed at festivals such as Havana Film Festival and Göteborg Film Festival, and venues such as Filmoteca Española, Cineteca (Matadero Madrid), Círculo de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires Museum and Site of Memory, New York's Symphony Space theater and the Great Prayer Hall of the Toledo synagogue. She has edited films for filmmakers such as Hassan Blasim and Hannaleena Hauru and visual artists Riikka Kuoppala and Rodríguez-Méndez. She has directed and co-programmed the Cuban film festival Kuubalaisen Elokuvan Päivät.
